Chris Harris of Drive’s Chris Harris on Cars has got his hands on the Porsche 918 Spyder and, quite expected really, came away seriously impressed with it.
The Porsche 918 Spyder completely redefines the supercar genre, because it isn’t exactly one in the true sense of the word. It is a hybrid and the battery pack makes it weigh more than a blue whale in supercar world. But, hey, the 918 Spyder also puts out 887 bhp and a ludicrous torque figure between 917 to 1280 Nm, depending on the gearing.
So it comes as no surprise that the 918 Spyder recently shattered the Nurburgring lap record for production cars, shaving 14 seconds off of the previous record holder and lapping the North Loop in just 6 minutes and 57 seconds, with an average top speed of 179 kmph. The hybrid accomplished this remarkable feat wearing Michel Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with Porsche racer and test driver Mark Lieb behind the wheel.
That should explain the grin on Chris Harris’ face. Looks like the McLaren P1 now has come catching up to do.
